Interview | Martha Harris

Martha Harris has already established herself as one of the Super League's most formidable defenders. Joining Liverpool in 2014, she was named Player of the Match in their Continental Cup Final with Arsenal, as well as collecting the Young Player of the Year award with some stand out performances. In her inaugural season, she also helped the Reds to the League Title.

Martha has also enjoyed considerable international success, coming through the ranks of the England U19's, U20's (where she represented England at the U20's World Cup) and U23's.

We had a few minutes with Martha to do a quick Q&A on how she fuels her performances at the elite level of Womens football...

Ahead of a game, what sorts of food/snacks are you having & when? "I usually have sweet potato and chicken with a bit of salad for my pre match meal. If it's early in the morning (so a lunch time kick off) I will have wheatabix with yoghurt and fruit!"

What do you eat (if at all) at half time, or after competing? "Banana, red bull and some fizzy laces! After I will have protein shake and  a meal with plenty of carbs and protein!" 

Does your diet change much between off & on-season? "Not really no, probably less carbohydrates when not training!"

Do you eat much at the gym/after the gym? "I always eat before any session! After the gym I will always have fruit".

What does a footballers gym session look like for you (lots of weights, or cardio, or a mix)? "Football gym session is usually a mix with some power session in also, involving explosive stuff, jumps, hops, etc!"

What is your cheat meal? "I tend to have candy king pic 'n' mix rather than a cheat meal!"

What meal(s) do rely on the most at home? Do you have a favourite recipe? "Fajitas is my favourite meal of all time, with a side of sweet potato chips!"

Is there anything you actively avoid? "I'm not really keen on cheese and it is usually very fatty so I avoid that and mayo!!"

How important is hydration at your level? "Extremely important, I tend to drink a lot of water during training, and try to at home!"

Do you have any pre-game rituals? "I always put my left shinpad on before my right same with my boots!"
